In partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium, we're streaming On Retelling Greek Classics with Madeline Miller. This is a live author event with an interactive Q&A session!

Madeline Miller is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of two novels: The Song of Achilles, which won the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2012, and Circe, which was short-listed for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2019. Her books have been translated into more than 30 languages. Miller holds an MA in Classics from Brown University and studied at Yale School of Drama, where she focused on the adaptation of classical texts to modern forms. She has taught Latin, Greek and Shakespeare to high school students for over a decade.

Join us as we chat with Miller about her body of work and her process of turning Greek classics into modern epic works of fiction. In The Song of Achilles, when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, the great warrior Achilles joins their cause. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice. And in Circe, a daughter is born to Helios, god of the sun, and his wife Perse, one of the nymph daughters of Oceanos. Circe turns to mortals for companionship and discovers that she possesses the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, Medea and, most famously, Odysseus.
