Program Description

Event Details

The origins of cumbia can be traced back to the slave trade in Colombia, where African drumming traditions were combined with Spanish musical styles. Cumbia is now one of the most popular genres of music in Latin America, and each country has developed its own style. Join Jennifer Lopez Contreras as she offers a beginner dance course to introduce participants to the rhythmic sounds and movements of Cumbia.

This program is offered in partnership with SCOW in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Join us for several programs this month, culminating in a Día de los Muertos celebration on October 25th.
