Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons

Orphaned at 19, Flora, who possesses "every art and grace save that of earning her own living,” prevails upon her distant relations, the Starkadders of Cold Comfort Farm, to take her in. Once there, she manages the family: beautiful Elfine; amorous Seth, territorial Reuben and the unforgettable Great-Aunt Ada, who once saw "something nasty in the woodshed." A parody of the doom-laden novels of rural life, Gibbons’ 1932 novel is one of the funniest satirical novels of the last 100 years.
