Our May 9th feature will be the 2021 Bhutanese comedy-drama Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom (rated PG). This heartwarming tale follows a young teacher who, despite his dreams of becoming an Australian pop singer, is transferred to the most remote school in the world, cut off from modern life deep in the Himalayan glaciers. In a classroom with no electricity or even a blackboard, he finds himself with a yak for company and a song that echoes through the mountains. Slowly, he is transformed by both the struggles and the spiritual strength of the villagers and their children. The first Bhutanese film to ever be nominated for an Oscar, this is a simple story that imparts universal truths across international borders.
