After a London financier retires and opens a bookshop, he is delighted when a customer named Edward suggests that they open an annex to stock classic titles. But Edward is being investigated by the Head of Domestic Security, who’s reviewing the work that Edward did during the Bosnian War and been told of potential wrongdoings by Edward’s dying wife, who used to be a top Mideast intelligence analyst. Le Carré’s posthumous novel is a haunting and fitting finale to a remarkable career.
