VIRTUAL & IN-PERSON MEETING
The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng
In 1921, the writer W. Somerset Maugham spends six months in Penang, Malaysia, vacationing with his secretary and lover, Gerald Haxton. Maugham is the guest of the British lawyer Robert Hamlyn and his wife Lesley. Although she initially finds Maugham vulgar, Lesley slowly warms to him and shares a few of her secrets, which later make their way into his book The Casuarina Tree. Tan Twan Eng’s atmospheric novel was longlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize for Fiction.
